(Times Staff Photo) Make-Up Days For Schools Is Announced Supt. Wayne Bradbum an nounces the make-up sched ule for the days lost by the Transylvania school system because of bad weather and road conditions. Nine days were lost. One was made up on February 5th, and the schedule for the make-up of the other 8 is as iftlows: 5 make-up days - April 11th 15th. These days were pre scheduled for spring holidays. 8th, which is Good Fri day, will still be scheduled as a holiday. 3 make-up days at the end of school, June 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The above schedule is con tingent upon no further days lost to weather, Mr. Bradbum says. By The Jaycees Transylvania’s Outstanding Young Men Cited At Banquet Three young men with out standing records of community service were honored by the Brevard Jaycees at their annual DSA banquet at Berry’s restaur ant. Joseph W. McGuire, Jr., prin cipal at Brevard senior high school, was cited for his service to the youth of the community and was recipient of the Distin guished Service Award as Tran sylvania’s outstanding young man of the year. Two other finalists, attorney John K. Smart, Jr., and John D. Clark, manager of the Local Duke Power company, were runners-up for the DSA. Mr. McGuire was selected by a panel of local judges, all over the age of 35, who were selected by a Jaycee committee. The Jaycees also honored Transylvania’s outstanding young educator. He is Landon B. Deal, Projects Cited First Phase Of Road Bond Money Allocated In County Allocation of the first phase of the Road Bond money in Transylvania county is an nounced today. Approximately one fifth of the total allocation, or $107, 00C, will be spent on the proj ects in this first phase. The following roads will be graded, stoned and paved: Walter McGuire rood, which is off Highway 280 for a dis tance of .60 miles. The Ross road loop off the Rcsman highway, 1.10 miles. Hannah Ford road, with the replacement of a bridge. Also, 1.10 miles. Other projects in the first phase include the Temple Church road off Morris road, .29 miles, and Williamson Creek road, .20 miles. Jaycee Tom Penn, chairman of the event, presided as master of ceremonies, and Jaycee pres ident John R. Hudson, Jr. wel comed the visitors. Auto Inspection Stations Are Set Up, Work Begins Feb. 16th $500 Reward Is Offered By Phone Company The Citizens Telephone company is offering a S500 reward for information lead ntg to ...i arrest and convic tion of anyone who has deli, berately damaged their tele phone cables, paystation booths and other facilities. Recently, lines were dam aged twice by shooting and the entire Cedar Mountain community was cut off from telephone service. It appears that lines were blasted by a shotgun. The budget is slightly less than last year's, which called for $7,852. The banquet was original ly slated to be held last Friday, February 4th, but poor road and weather conditions forced a post ponement. Banquet officials, after confer ring with the banquet speaker, W. Stanley Finch, of Greenville, S. C., suggested several alternate dates that might be acceptable for Mr. Finch. After discussing all possibili ties, the directors decided Tues day night to hold the banquet, with Mr. Finch as speaker, on Friday night, April 15th. Mr. Finch, said to be one of the top 25 after dinner speakers in the country today, is director of public relations and sales training for Texize Chemicals, Inc. of Greenville, S. C. Stan Meares. newly elected president of the Chamber of Commerce, presided at his first meeting Tuesday night. He called on the directors to help lead the chamber to its greatest year during 1966. He also stated that most all committee appointments had been made, but that there were several chairmen and commit tee members yet to be named. The budget was presented by Jerry Jerome, chairman of the finance committee. It was adopt ed after a very brief discussion. A large number of directors was on hand for this, the first official meeting since their elec tion. Last Digit On License Tag Is Deadline Date Seven automobile inspec tion stations have been desig nated for Brevard and Tran -s -ivania • >>' nty. According to K. J. Wider, inspector for the Department of Motor Vehicles, inspections will start next Wednesday, Feb. 16th, here and across North Carolina. ♦ Establishments that have been certified as inspection stations in Brevard and Transylvania county are as follows: Brevard Amoco Ccleman Tire company Goodwill Motor company Hayes Motors Hegsed Auto company Lyda-McCrary Motors McCrary Auto Service Inspector Miller says that he expects to authorize other in spection stations in the town and county in the next few weeks. The inspection of autos was authorized by last year’s Gen eral Assembly. All cars bearing 1966 North Carolina license tags must be checked sometime this year. Deadline for inspection is ac cording to the last digit of the 1966 license plate. If a person’s tag ends with the number “3”, his car must be inspected by —Turn to Page Three Program Highlights Many Giving Approval To The "New Sound" Of WPNF WPNF’s “New Sound” has been the subject of much fav orable comment during the first few weeks of the new year, ac cording to station personnel. A number of letters have been received from persons throughout the station’s greatly increased listening area, ex pressing approval for the new format which began with the new year. In addition, numerous phone calls have been received almost daily, with generally favorable comment on new programs and staff members. “It’s a thrill for each of us to receive these comments from listeners and advertisers alike,” stated Manager A1 Martin. “Several of our listeners have offered bits of constructive crit icism and suggestions which are being seriously considered as we continue to update our program schedule and public service fea tures. .
